Programs & Classes BJJ FOR ADULTS
Jiu Jitsu: The Gentle Art
Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from beginner to expert levels
Fundamentals Class
Fundamentals class is designed for beginner and intermediate athletes. We will focus on developing a well-rounded skillset, studying both gi and nogi jiu jitsu with sport and self-defense applications (including takedowns). The fundamentals are not just the basics. They are the most important, most effective techniques that will suit the widest variety of people. In class, you will learn how to spar. In jiu jitsu, we call sparring “rolling.” You’ll learn the rules, the proper techniques, and the different positions so that everyone can roll safely and have a blast doing it.
Advanced Class
Advanced class is designed for experienced practitioners and is by invitation only. In this class, we will cover leg entanglements, leg locks, advanced takedowns, longer sequences, chaining multiple techniques together, and personalizing our jiu jitsu through increased drilling and sparring time and through troubleshooting sessions. This will be more of a collective learning atmosphere with occasional guest instructors to ensure variety and appeal to everyone regardless of body type, size, or style.
Personal Hygiene
Jiu Jitsu is practiced in very close proximity to other people. This makes good personal hygiene super important. No one wants to train with someone who is unclean and smells bad. There are a few things you can do to make sure you don't develop a reputation for being the "stinky person" in class.
- Shower before and after class. This will not only keep you smelling good, but it's important to wash your body after class to prevent anything from sitting on your skin. We have two showers available for people coming straight from work.
- Brush your teeth before class. Having minty, fresh breath will go a long way with your training partners.
- Wear deodorant. Bad body odor is not something you want to be remembered for.
- Clip your finger and toenails. This is important because if your fingernails and toenails aren't trimmed, you can actually scratch people and cut them. So, this can actually be a bit of a safety issue, especially when there is a bunch of sweaty people on the mats. You don't want to have any breaks in the skin and allow any bacteria or anything else entering the body that's not supposed to.
- Wash your gi. This is very important. Some people allow their gi to sit in their gym bag overnight or even multiple days at a time before washing it. This is a terrible idea. Washing your gi after class is mandatory. If you let your gi sit for too long, bacteria will begin to grow, and your gi will start to develop a permanent smell. This smell is something we call "gi funk." Create a good habit of washing your gi after every single training session, no matter what. This will also help maintain your gi properly and allow it to last without developing the dreaded gi funk for many years of hard training.

Culture of learning
In order to achieve and maintain a positive vibe in the academy, it is imperative that we all have self control, check our egos, and are always respectful and humble so that everyone can learn jiu jitsu and leave excited to come back to train tomorrow. This will lead to a culture of learning, respect, and camaraderie.
Family atmosphere
This is a family academy. All prospective members are subject to a background check to ensure a safe environment. We will have kids, teens, and adults--some with no experience and others with extensive experience--all training in the same facility. A culture of learning, respect, and camaraderie will result in an environment that will be a positive place for everyone to train.

Success Stories
Some of our testimonials from our students
Self-Defense
The self-defense curriculum will be incorporated into all the adult fundamentals classes. We will cover how to deal with someone who is bigger, stronger, and more aggressive. You will learn how to deal with someone that tries to punch or kick you and how to deal with common strikes. We will cover things like headlock and bearhug defense. What to do if you are pinned up against a wall or when someone grabs your hair from behind. This will be additional, supplementary training that will be incorporated into the fundamentals class curriculum. Jiu jitsu is both a martial art and a sport, but it is first and foremost a martial art, and that means that the techniques should be effective in a fighting context. We will discuss what techniques are effective in a fighting scenario and what techniques could get you hurt and leave you vulnerable to attack. Training in the gi, or with the kimono, is actually very practical because people wear jackets, sweatshirts, coats, belts, pants that won't rip, suits, and other similar clothing. Knowing how to use clothing to manipulate your opponent and defend yourself is extremely beneficial and important. Training nogi, or without the kimono, will prepare you to deal with someone if they don't have a shirt on, or shorts, or clothing that can rip easily. Training both will make you better prepared to take on anyone that has ill intent toward you.
Fundamantals
This program will focus on the fundamentals, which are the most important, most effective, and highest percentage techniques used to physically control and manipulate another person. You will learn the self-defense side of jiu jitsu and how to safely and effectively grapple against other people in the academy and in a competition setting. We will take you step by step through all the major positions and techniques in an easy-to-understand and engaging way. We will teach you how to effectively control someone from all the major positions, how to maneuver between those positions, and how to attack and defend from those positions. You will also learn how to transition from standing to a ground position by using fundamental judo and wrestling takedowns and throws in a safe and controlled environment so that we can mitigate risk of injury as much as possible. Safety, positive vibes, and effectiveness are top priorities in fundamentals class. You will develop many important qualities and skills, such as determination, creative problem solving under stress, loyalty, hard work, integrity, honesty, self-discipline, and emotional control. One of the best things about training jiu jitsu is that while you're getting a great workout and experiencing the benefits of being physically active, you will notice that you stop focusing on the sources of stress and negativity in your life, and this provides a critical mental break. This will leave you feeling positive and recharged, which is so important after a long and stressful day.
Intermediate
Intermediate students (blue belts) will continue to train in the fundamentals classes, but as this is a transitionary period in your journey, and as you progress into the later stages of your rank, it is very beneficial for you to train with advanced level athletes who can expose your weaknesses and push you to the next level. You will get the chance to train with the advanced students in the advanced class when you receive an invitation from an instructor. This will give you an opportunity to finish developing your foundational and fundamental skills while gaining experience in advanced positions and attacks like leg entanglements and leg locks. A certain level of competence will be expected when transitioning to the advanced class.
Advanced
Advanced class will be for experienced students only. We will expect a high level of competence in order to attend this class. This expected competence will ensure a high level of safety and reduced number of injuries. You will not be able to attend if you are egotistical, spazzy, and demonstrate, uncontrolled dangerous and immature training behaviors. We will be executing high amplitude throws and takedowns, so you will need to know how to fall correctly. We will cover leg entanglements and leg locks. We will cover more advanced and lengthy sequences and attack chains. We will focus on personalizing our jiu jitsu and explore the best way to incorporate the new techniques into our games. This class will be collaborative in nature. We will have increased drilling and rolling time.
